My knowledge and ability increased significantly during my third year, as I spent a significant amount of time on my project. I've always loved creating things, and the course helped to show me how to do that with computers. This, coupled with a good degree result from a respected University, is invaluable to get your foot in the door.

Current position: Head of Research, AppSense

My degree programme was a good introduction to Computer Science which covered a wide variety of areas that have proven useful since. Since graduating, I've worked for a number of software development companies, working on a range of different software and hardware. Each stage has been a step to the next one, and I continue to try to develop my skills and abilities.

I currently work for AppSense, as Head of Research. I'm responsible for a small team, and we work closely to work on ideas and software that aim to ensure AppSense is at the leading edge of the curve. Between us, we have a diverse set of backgrounds, and it is important to build on this as we look to future trends and capabilities. Through my career so far, I've been fortunate to be exposed to a number of different situations, each of which helps with experience. We have to be relevant across many platforms on native and cross-platform technologies for each. Keeping all of the necessary information in your head is hard. We can be working on Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android platforms at the same time, so you need to be comfortable with context switching between languages, frameworks, and tools.

Manchester is a great place to live and study. It is incredibly diverse, and as a person opened me up to so much more culture and differences than I'd ever had from the village I grew up in. It is a great city, and I'm proud to have lived, studied, and worked in Manchester.
