I will have a well-respected and well-rounded degree when I will graduate, and the unique amount of practical experience offered at Manchester is what will differentiate me from other graduates. In addition, the industrial connections in the School of Computer Science are invaluable.

The University of Manchester is great and I couldn’t have made a better choice for my studies. I wanted to study to one of the top universities, and when I saw Manchester offered Computer Science with a year in industry, I knew this was the perfect place to be.

Most of the units on the course are interesting and really well explained, and we get more practical experience through lab work than most comparable courses. Other skills and attributes I have gained so far include good organisational habits, team-working and of course, advanced computer science preparation.

There are many student societies for one to get involved and socialise with people of similar interests. I’m a PASS Leader, a Student Helper to the School of Computer Science Open Days, I’m part of the Manchester Ultimate Programming Committee where we organise weekly meetings/workshops and occasionally we organise hackathons (24h events). Hackathons are a great way to improve your knowledge and to build up your confidence in what you have learned so far. I have also recently become a STEMNet Ambassador.

My really short advice to people considering this course would be don’t overthink it, just do it! Why do I say that? This course is really great for everyone; it doesn’t matter if you have a lot of previous experience or if you don’t, you will just learn everything from scratch and you will receive a lot of support from everyone.
