Digital 60 – celebrating 60 years of digital computing
2008 sees the 60th anniversary of the world’s first stored program digital computer, designed and built here in Manchester. As part of the celebrations The University and City are planning a number of activities to be collectively branded ‘Digital 60’.
‘Digital 60’ brings together stakeholders from across the city, including the University of Manchester, Manchester City Council, Manchester Digital Development Agency, the BCS, the IET and MOSI; The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester.
The University’s involvement in Digital 60 will be focused around a number of activities taking place on Friday June 20th 2008, including a public lecture, a lecture for schools and some joint activities with MOSI.
In the run up to the anniversary, the School of Computer Science is also running a computer animation competition for school children and a competition to program "The Baby" – the Small Scale Experimental Machine that ran its first program on June 21st 1948.
