About Klaus Havelund

  • Senior Research Scientist, Ph.D., NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
  • Appointed Lecturer in Computer Science at California Institute of Technology

Klaus obtained his Master of Science education in Computer Science from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. During the 1990s he worked in Paris, at Ecole Normale Supérieure, where he obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Copenhagen, and later at Université Pierre et Marie Curie Paris VI. Klaus worked in a start-up company in Silicon Valley specializing in software reliability, before joining NASA in 1997.

He has worked as a researcher in Computer Science at NASA for more than a decade, first at NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California, and more recently, since 2006, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California. JPL is mainly responsible for NASA’s unmanned robotic missions beyond the moon, specifically, the exploration of planets and moons within our solar system - the Mars missions being the flagship example.

Klaus’s main objective is the development of technologies for ensuring correct behaviour of software on board spacecraft and planetary rovers. He has also written numerous papers, and is involved in the organization of international computer science events.

The School of Computer Science is delighted to welcome Klaus as a Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished Visiting Fellow to the University of Manchester.
