Welcome News on ICT Curriculum
Date: 15th January 2012
Staff in the School have been monitoring with interests today's comments by Education Secretary Michael Gove on the state of ICT teaching in schools.
We welcome Michael Gove’s speech and his initiative to transform secondary education. Moreover, we're delighted by Michael’s suggestion that simple programming tools to create animations can be used to excite students into the study of Computer Science and into careers that are intellectually rewarding and stimulating to the economy. The School has been running an animation competition for secondary students for 5 years which has succeeded in exciting students in exactly the way that Michael Gove’s initiative seeks to achieve.
The University of Manchester’s Animation competition has been running for 5 years. Animation 11 (in 2011) had 563 UK schools registered, 886 entries and 45 winning students from 25 different schools. 350 students attended the final day event in Manchester University. Animation 12 is running now. Animation has been fully funded by industry throughout its life, this year sponsored by Google, EA Games and Nesta.
