Contact Details Help

How do I find someone not in the directory?

If you cannot find the person you are looking for within this directory please try the following:

  1. Conduct your search using the University directory.
  2. Contact Computer Science's Academic Support Office (ACSO) for assistance.

How do I change my details?

The data for the contact details are drawn from the University's staff directory therefore if you wish to update your details please locate your details in the University directory and use the "Change your details" option to update them.

If your details are correct in the University directory but only your name is appearing in the Computer Science directory (i.e. without the details) log in to the University directory and set your details to be 'world' readable.

How do I add myself to the directory?

If your details do not appear in our contact list this is possibly because access to your details is restricted from within the University directory. For your details to appear on these pages they must be accessible to the world. To provide world access log in to the University directory (as you would to change your details) and alter the settings accordingly. Equally if you do not wish your details to appear in the Computer Science staff list set your details to only be available within the University. Please note that it will take at least a day for the change to filter to the Computer Science contact pages.

If your contact details are public and you still do not appear in the contact lists, or if you do not appear in the correct staff subcategory (see left hand menu bar), please contact one of the following people who have administrator access to the EPS system:

How do I create or edit my research profile?

If you have a research profile your name will link from our contact details page to a page which extracts your research profile in to our look and feel. If you do not have a research profile your basic contact details will appear when your name is clicked.

Research profile pages are managed through the University Staff Portal accessed by clicking "My portal home" on the following page:

Link: Staff net

The tool (or portlet) for editing your profile is called "Academic profiles". If the portlet does not appear under one of your portal tabs please follow these instructions:

  1. Select "Add Content".
  2. Select "Browse Channels".
  3. Select "Services" (LHS).
  4. Select "Academic profiles" (RHS).
  5. Select "Add to my page".

Please pay attention to the tab "RIP Health Check". This tab will tell you whether you have met all the conditions for your profile to be published.

If you are a non-academic member of staff this will allow you to publish information about yourself in our contact pages but not within the University's research directory.

If you are non-academic and feel you should be published within the research directory we will need to contact EPS to have your status changed.

I have been informed that it can take 48 hours for changes to filter through from the portal to our contact page. In my experience this is not an exaggeration so please be patient.

At present there is no mechanism to view your changes prior to their publication. This enhancement is under development.

How do I add a homepage to my entry?

If you wish a link to appear to your personal homepage please follow these instructions:

  1. Log in to the "Academic profiles" editing tool found in the staff portal. Please see previous section of this guide for instructions if you don't already know how to do this.
  2. In the welcome tab of the "Academic profiles" portlet select the "Create" button for "Lists".
  3. Set the title to be "MANWS" and then select "Personal" for "Profile Tab".
  4. Select "Add" and you should see a new tab titled "Personal Websites".
  5. Edit "Personal Websites" to point to your homepage and make sure that you have set access to public.

The link to your homepage will appear under the title "Websites" in your "Personal details" tab in our contact details website. For an example see Iain Hart's profile.

I have been informed that it can take 48 hours for changes to filter through from the portal to our contact page. In my experience this is not an exaggeration so please be patient.

How do I add a photograph to my entry?

At present there is no mechanism to upload a photograph through the staff portal. This enhancement is being developed. If you would like a photograph to appear in your profile please send the photograph to Steven Liem in EPS Information Systems and he will add your photograph.

Who is intended to use this directory?

This directory is intended for staff external to the University of Manchester. Staff of the University should use the University Directory. The advanced search allows for a search on school or department.

Why do I have to update my own details?

The purpose of forcing staff to maintain their own details (as opposed to support staff providing this service) is to give staff control over their own data protection. By removing the possibility of a member of support staff mistakenly providing global access to a member of staff's details the University and the member of staff are protected from an accidental breach of the data protection act.
