As a University, Manchester captures a great vibe; the schools are small enough to get to know everyone and get stuck into some research if you want to, yet there is always something else to get involved in. Having modern greats such as Steve Furber in the department made the decision to study here even easier.

Current position: Project Leader at In Touch Ltd

Manchester is a great city; small enough to walk across the centre in 20 minutes but big enough that everything is here. As a University, Manchester captures exactly the same vibe; the schools are small enough to get to know everyone and get stuck into some research if you want to, yet there is always something else to get involved in. With figures such as Ernest Rutherford and Alan Turing having been at Manchester, it was hard to turn it down. Having modern greats such as Steve Furber in the department made the decision to study here even easier.

I really enjoyed everything about my degree, although I wish I could have spent more time in the School; it has a niggling ability to make you want to go back for more. The first year Logic and Computing modules and second year Algorithms course really fired my imagination; they demonstrated how the field really isn't about programming, but about innovative problem solving. The School at Manchester really opens your eyes to the breadth of the field by immersing you in the current research the School is doing and giving you opportunities to think on your feet and innovate.

Since completing a BSc and MSc at the School, I really haven’t been able to stay away, working with the Advanced Interfaces Group and doing outreach events with the School. I now run my own software development firm Novasis, and I also do some freelance work and am a Project Leader at In Touch Ltd, where I plan, resource and run the development activities of the software team. The constant changing from one day to the next really attracts me to Software Development. Designing software is one of the purest creative activities you can try your hand at and no two problems are ever the same. There is a lot to be said for being able to find a job where you are constantly challenged, both technically and also creatively to come up with new ideas.
