ICYMI: Where to look, who to speak to and upcoming events to help you start your career

If you've already found a graduate job, congratulations! If you're looking one, lots of the bigger employers recruit graduates between now and Christmas. Its a good idea to apply as early as you can and not wait for the deadlines. Thankfully you have a bit more time this year, than you did in your second year, to do job applications. Here's a recap on job hunting, for those that missed the session on Wednesday 20th September at 4pm in LT 1.1.

    When: Upcoming autumn events

    Who to talk to

It's not just what you know, but who you know...

    • There are several Meet the Professionals networking events with alumni from the University of Manchester scheduled for autumn, see the calendar at goo.gl/qASvyK
    • If you are preparing for a technical coding interview, cracking the coding interview by Gayle Laakman is a cracking read. We've copies in the Kilburn library available via SSO. Also take a look at pramp.com, where you can pair with peer to practice technical interviews online.
    • Manchester Gold: get your own personal mentor a popular scheme with both students and employers that has been running for 15 years
    • You can book an appointment with the careers service during term time, get your CVs, covering letters and applications checked, see git.io/mycv. You can also do mock interviews, and rehearse standard competency based questions
    • Talk to staff and students in the schol, your personal tutor (your 3rd year project supervisor), Mabel Yau (in L426) or me (in LF25) if you are seeking advice

    Where to look

There's no shortage of places you can look for jobs, here are some of the better places to start looking:
