The IT behind the Greatest Show on Earth

  • Speaker:   Gerry  Pennell  (University of Manchester)
  • Host:   Robert Stevens

Abstract
Gerry Pennel, previously CIO for the London Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, explains the significant role that IT plays in a major sporting event and overviews some of the challenges in successfully delivering it. For example, London 2012 had 4.73bn page views on its web-site with 60% of the load coming from mobile devices that were using 15m downloads of the mobile apps. London 2012's 94 venues used 5500km of cabling/80000 access points and 19300 PCs. The London 2012 IT thus presented many technical challenges in testing, software integration, performance, security as well as the economic and socio-cultural aspects of such a large project.
