Abstract
In this research seminar I will introduce the basic ideas behind a novel framework to deal with queries over databases mediated by ontologies. I will start by motivating the necessity of a different approach for dealing with databases and ontologies. I will then introduce and justify the notions of determinacy and independence of queries and knowledge bases. The proposed framework aims at answering queries in a SQL-compilable way, with ontologies in an arbitrary decidable fragment of FOL; we will give more results in the case of description logics. Finally, I will relax the conditions on queries and knowledge bases by using abduction-based approximations. This seminar introduces preliminary research, and it will be mostly informal.
