By choosing to study at Manchester you will be joining one of the most innovative and successful schools of computer science in the world. Manchester saw the birth of computer science, with the creation of the world's first stored-program computer, and has contributed over the years to some of the discipline's most exciting and important innovations.
We continue to work on pioneering research including cutting-edge image processing software, new technologies to exploit the power of the web, medical imaging software and low-power chip design. Visit the link below to find out more about Computer Science Postgraduate Research Degree Programmes available.
Students considering 4 Year PhD study at Manchester are invited to apply to join a new Centre for Doctoral Training in Computer Science, the first of its kind in the UK.
A new model of PhD training which preserves the deep technical research study associated with the UK PhD, while augmenting this with training and practical experience in creativity and innovation, scientific evaluation, and experiences working with and communicating with users from outside academia.
The School's Human Centred Web (HCW) Laboratory is currently working in conjunction with the Manchester City Art Gallery to investigate the ways in which people access visual information within art. The experiment builds on previous research into how internet users access information on web pages, and aims to inform the development of text-to-speech technology. Experiments are being carried using the eye-tracking technology to gain an understanding of the sequence in which sighted users focus on areas of a visual resource.
Current active research projects are listed here. These are projects suggested by members of academic staff. Students can browse and chose suitable project from the list. Alternatively, there are options for submitting proposals for personal project through area supervisors. Advice on writing a research proposal is available from here.
