How to Apply
There are two main routes onto a Postgraduate Research Programme at Manchester.
1: 4 Year CDT Programme
In 2011 the School is launching a new 4-year PhD programme to be delivered through the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training. The centre has been supported by significant research council funding and studentships are available for both home and EU students. Please see details here.
2: Traditional 3 Year PhD
In parallel to the programmes offered through our new Centre for Doctoral Training the School continues to offer a traditional three year PhD programme. The guidelines below detail the application process for the 3-year PhD programme.
How to Apply
If you are interested in studying our 3-year PhD programme, you may apply by either writing your own research proposal or by applying to one of the projects listed on our projects page.
If you wish to submit your own proposal, you are essentially applying for a place in a research group or with a particular supervisor. You therefore need to look through the research pages, research projects or search staff research interests, to find a suitable topic and/or potential supervisor.
Your application should also be accompanied by a detailed CV. Once you have decided on a programme, identified a topic and/or supervisor and written a research proposal you will be ready to apply online.
You can find guidelines on writing a research proposal here.
If you wish to apply for one of our highlighted projects, you need to consult the research projects page. Then, when you submit your online application, make sure that you indicate on the form which project and academic you are interested in. Please submit a statement of purpose presenting your own perspective of the proposed project, why it is important and worth studying and a methodology that may be adopted.
The main University website also has full details on:
- other application options,
- additional supporting documentation required,
- further advice for international applicants.
Entry requirements
For details of our entry requirements by country and qualification see our Postgraduate Research Entry Requirements.
On-line application
You may apply for all postgraduate courses using the on-line application system.
Dates and deadlines
All programmes are recruiting. Please complete and submit your applications. There is not normally a deadline, but competition for places means that it is recommended that you apply earlier rather than later.
Procedures
Admissions are determined entirely on academic grounds and those of provision of facilities. The Admissions Officer reserves the right to refuse applications on such grounds and there is no appeal against a decision. However, if you are unhappy with the processing of your application, there is a complaints procedure. To invoke the procedure, ask the PG Admissions Officer to contact the Academic Admissions Officers.
Further information
If you require any further details about the courses, the procedures or other information, please contact the Postgraduate Admissions Officer. If you do not have access to the postgraduate website, you can be supplied with a printed information pack and application forms.
