English Language Requirements
All students are required to be proficient in spoken and written English.
In order to be accepted onto a research programme in the School of Computer Science, non-native English speakers need to achieve an IELTS score of 7 (minimum) or TOEFL 600+ (paper-based), 250+ (computer-based), 100+ (internet-based) or Cambridge Proficiency Grade `C' (minimum) before the programme start date. Students who have been in full-time education in the UK for 3 years are exempt from this requirement.
Conditional offers may be made to strong applicants who fall short just slightly of the English language requirements. Such students still need to demonstrate that they satisfy the English language requirement before they receive an unconditional offer, or may be required to take a prescribed Pre-Sessional Language course prior to the start of the degree.
The School is committed to helping each and every student fulfil their
potential on the PhD programme. Therefore, in addition to the core programme
modules, we offer free in-sessional English language courses for all students
who require ongoing support. Further information about these courses will
be provided at registration.
If you envisage any difficulties in satisfying our English language
requirements then please do let us know.
The University offer a number of excellent pre-sessional English courses
designed specifically to help international students meet our requirements
prior to the start of their programmes.
Further information on pre-sessional courses can be found at: www.langcent.manchester.ac.uk
