Academic Entry Requirements

For the academic year 2010/2011, the standard academic entry requirement for an MPhil or PhD is an Upper Second Class UK Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant science or engineering discipline. Students with an additional UK Masters degree or international equivalent are also eligible.

The school may require a First Class Honours degree or international equivalent for some research projects. This requirement is specified at the discretion of the academic supervisor involved.

Two letters of reference pertaining to your academic capabilities are required. Evidence of potential to carry out a research project is also very important. Any applicant who has carried out a research project, either at MSc level or BSc level, should choose at least one referee who can comment on the quality of this work.

Further Information Further information about the supporting documentation required is available on our How To Apply page.

Relevant Degree Subjects

The most common first degree is Computer Science, but these are not the only first degrees we seek. Others include:

Mathematics

There is a strong mathematical component to much of our research, and a good degree in mathematics is relevant to most of our research activities.

Physics

A good background in Physics, particularly theoretical physics or computational physics, is relevant to research carried out by several members of academic staff.

Engineering

There are strong engineering activities taking place across the school, particularly in the Advanced Processor Technologies Group, and the Nano Engineering & Storage Technology Group.

Others

A key theme across the School is the interdisciplinary nature of much of the research being carried out. For example, there are strong interactions between Biology, Medicine and Computer Science. Consequently other backgrounds are sometimes relevant, particularly when some experience of computation has also been acquired.
