Postgraduate Research Funding 2012/13

Research Funding Home

Applicants who have applied for and been offered a place for PhD study in the School of Computer Science may be considered for funding. There are different categories of studentships, scholarships and fellowships which will be announced in phases as they become available. The total number varies from year to year. Last year about 20 new PhD students were awarded funding via the School and a total of about 60 PhD students were in receipt of funding. Details of current opportunities are given below. New opportunities will be announced on this page which is updated approximately monthly.

Funding opportunities exist for students wishing to join our 3 year PhD programme, details of which are given below. A significant amount of funding is also available to home and EU students wishing to join the 4 year programme offered through our new Centre for Doctoral Training.

Further information is available here.

School Studentships

Funding for UK and EU PhD Students

We may be able to offer funding to UK and EU nationals who wish to start a PhD from September 2012. The studentships pay all tuition fees and a stipend award for 3 years. Applicants must be eligible to pay 'home fees'. There will normally be opportunities (or, in some cases, requirements) to undertake some teaching, in the form of laboratory demonstration.

For further details see the School Studentships UK/EU page.

Please note that the School has recently launched an EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Computer Science. This CDT has many scholarships for UK and EU students starting in September 2012. These scholarships pay all tuition fees and a stipend award for 4 years.

For further details see the CDT funding page.

Funding for non-EU International students

Please note that the School has no full scholarships available for overseas students.

The School may be able to offer 'School-ORS' (fees contribution) scholarships to suitably qualified international PhD students who are able to start in September 2012 or, in some cases, earlier. The criteria are academic qualifications, supporting statements from referees familiar with the demands of academic research and the quality of a 'research proposal'. The scholarships will pay a contribution to the full fee each year over 3 years (approximately 75% of the full fee) with a commitment to undertake about 90 hours of teaching or demonstrating. The University cannot make any contribution towards living expenses, nor any further contribution towards fees, and must be satisfied that the applicant has sufficient external funding to support the required three years of study.

For further details see the School Studentships non-EU International page.

Project Studentships

The School often has fully funded PhD Scholarships that are attached to specific research projects.  UK, EU and non-EU international applicants may be eligible.  Information about current opportunities is available here.

Faculty PhD Studentships 2012

The Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences has launched a further 10 PhD studentships (also known as Dean’s Awards) for 2012. These awards are open to all nationalities and research areas within the Faculty. Please visit here for more information.
