Fellowship details:

We are seeking to recruit up to two PhD students who are eligible to be nominated for the Google European Doctoral Fellowship Programme for 2010. The programme, running for the first time this year, has been established by Google to support the best and brightest PhD students in the field of Computer Science. Europe’s leading Computer Science departments have been asked to nominate candidates for these fully funded fellowships to study PhD topics ranging from computer architecture to cloud computing. The full range of research areas is listed below. The Google Fellowships are open to prospective home/EU and international PhD students. Other funded PhD opportunities will be announced by the School shortly and enquiries about these will be welcomed.

Fellowship overview:

The Google European Doctoral Fellowship Programme was created to support outstanding PhD students doing exceptional research in the field of computer science.  These fellowships will provide up to three years support for an individual doing research within a PhD programme in computer science and related disciplines.  The fellowship includes a cash award covering tuition fees and stipend/salary at the typical rate for the university, and funds for conference travel and personal equipment. Additionally, Doctoral Fellows will be assigned a Google mentor, invited to a Fellowship Forum at Google, and strongly encouraged to apply for an internship at Google.

In 2010, Google will award approximately 10 named fellowships from amongst the following:

  • Google Fellowship in Natural Language Processing
  • Google Fellowship in Machine Learning
  • Google Fellowship in Computer Security
  • Google Fellowship in Distributed Computing
  • Google Fellowship in Programming Technology
  • Google Fellowship in Machine Translation
  • Google Fellowship in Speech Technology
  • Google Fellowship in Human Computer Interaction
  • Google Fellowship in Cloud Computing
  • Google Fellowship in Computer Architecture
  • Google Fellowship in Structured Data Analysis
  • Google Fellowship in Search and Information Retrieval
  • Google Fellowship in Efficient Computing (or Green Computing)
  • Google Fellowship in Mobile Computing
  • Google Fellowship in Computer Vision
  • Google Fellowship in Social Computing
  • Google Fellowship in Computer Networking

Application Procedure:

To be eligible for nomination as a University of Manchester candidate for a Google Fellowship, an applicant must have completed the University online application form and specified a PhD project which fits both the fellowship topics outlined above and the research interests of a member of academic staff here in the School. The PhD project may be one selected from our list of available PhD projects or a 'research proposal' made by the applicant. Further information about writing a research proposal is available here.

Application Form

To apply for nomination, please complete and submit the Google Fellowship Application Form along with your CV. You must also ensure that your PhD application is complete in that you have supplied:

  • Transcripts of previous and current academic records
  • (a) Your research proposal or (b) details of the selected PhD project and why you have selected it.
  • Letters of recommendation from at least two referees who are familiar with your work. (If you have recently graduated, suitable referees would normally be your final year project supervisor and/or MSc project supervisor).

The application form and all documents mentioned above must be received by the University of Manchester by the deadline of Friday March 19th 2010.
If you are nominated we will be required to submit all the information you have supplied to Google.
