Manchester is renowned for its innovative approach to MSc teaching. Our size and research strength enable us to offer a combination of breadth, depth and flexibility that is difficult to find elsewhere. Students are free to shape their own programmes by choosing from a wide spectrum of computer science and interdisciplinary topics. Students opting for the Advanced Computer Science programme can either opt to follow the standard programme or to flavour their MSc by choosing a particular pathway. Pathways enable students to graduate from the long established and highly respected ACS programme together with a recognition of their specialisation.
In addition to being able to select from multiple programmes and pathways the breadth of the MSc is further augmented by the multiple MSc themes on offer. Themes are collections of course units grouped together to provide focus on specialist topics. Themes are selected at the beginning of the academic year and enable students to deepen their knowledge in specific areas.
- Theme = Average of 3 course units..
- MSc Programme or an ACS Pathway = Selection of 2 themes.
A number of Kilburn Scholarships are available to students starting on postgraduate taught programmes in September 2010. The Kilburn Scholarships are in memory of Tom Kilburn, who, in 1948 designed and built the world's first stored program computer here in Manchester. They are awarded on academic merit to home/EU or international students who we believe have the skills and aptitude to help the School build on Kilburn's legacy of achievement and innovation.

The School of Computer Science is working with industry leaders to bridge the gap between the teaching of advanced IT systems and its practice in industry.
The forum is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Computer Science and Manchester Business School. The lecture series is a compulsory element of a number of postgraduate courses in both schools. Anyone wishing to attend any lectures in the series may turn up at their chosen lecture(s) with no need to register.
The forum comprises a series of industrial guest lectures. One lecture will be delivered each week by different guest speakers from top IT companies such as Bloomberg, IBM and Hewlett Packard.
