Research Quality
The School of Computer Science is globally renowned for the quality of it’s research, having contributed to some of the discipline’s most exciting and important innovations, from the creation of the world’s first stored programme computer, to the development of next generation web technologies.
This history of groundbreaking achievement continues to attract the best academics and students to Manchester to apply computational thinking to some of the world’s most pressing and complex problems. Our leading edge contributions in areas such as neural systems engineering, semantic web technologies, e-science and grid computing contributed to our award of a 5*, the highest possible rating, in the last UK Research Assessment Exercise.
In addition to our work on core computer science topics, we are increasing contributing to advances at the interface with other disciplines, with many Manchester computer scientists driven by the challenges presented by these new areas of application. Exciting work is emerging from these collaborations, particularly with Mathematics, Physics, Medicine and Biology, but increasingly with other disciplines, including engineering, business and social science.
The strength of our research is augmented through our close ties with industry. Collaborations with IBM, AstraZeneca and Siemens Medical Systems, and our history of success in the commercialisation of our research findings, help us maximise the quality, relevance and practical impact of our research.
