The week of the research symposium has finally arrived. You should have all been receiving separate emails about your role to play this week.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) we kick off the Symposium with a keynote talk, a free lunch, and a poster session.
11:00. Keynote by Professor Simon Thompson. On the journey to independence: from first idea to first grant
Being a career researcher isn’t just about “doing the research”. We’re called upon to plan what we’ll do, as well as having to pitch for - and win - support from departments, conference committees, government agencies and companies. In this talk, I’ll look at how we can make plans for our research, and in due course, how to make these plans into what we hope will be successful research grant applications. We’ll look too at some of the ways of getting it wrong, as well as tips for getting it right.
This talk promises to be a useful and interesting insight into how to get the most out of your research ideas. Simon has asked me to request that you bring along paper and something to write with as part of the talk will require you to write something down.
12:00. Prize-giving. IBM sponsors prizes for Outstanding Thesis and Outstanding Paper. Come along and find out who won.
12:30. There's no such thing as a free lunch, except this one. Free buffet lunch in the Lower First Area.
12:30 - 15:00. Poster Session in the Lower First Area. Something to look at whilst you eat that free lunch.

A final note. Some parts of the symposium will be captured on film for promotional usage. The talks themselves will not be recorded.
