Bookings Now Open for the Tenth Annual Manchester Enterprise School!
The Manchester Enterprise School is a funded four day residential enterprise activity taking place this year on the southern edge of the Lake District at the Grange Hotel in Grange-over-Sands from Monday 2nd to Thursday 5th July 2018 for 30 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
It is open to all Ph.D. students or researchers from any faculty and is an excellent opportunity to learn about enterprise and how to apply it to your work, whether you intend a career in academia, industry or start your own business. Many attendees have kept in touch on their return, several start their own business each year and almost all find themselves using their new skills.
The aim is for researchers in teams to create a business case for an idea they have fully explored during the course and the Lake District provides an excellent environment for business ideas, especially those with a social enterprise element. Problems exist such as seasonality, brain drain, unemployment, tourism (the good and bad elements they bring), pollution, farming and local produce, transport, water engineering and the nuclear industry nearby for example.
The experience is a highly interactive, group working environment, tutored by experts and guest entrepreneurs and you will also be speaking to real potential customers and businesses in the area for feedback to help shape your ideas.
You can read about the Enterprise School in 2017 here: https://mec.portals.mbs.ac.uk/Newsevents/tabid/111/ArticleID/282/ArtMID/481/PgrID/481/PageID/2/Manchester-Enterprise-School-2017.aspx
To apply for your free place return the attached application to Elisa.Harrocks@Manchester.ac.uk. If selected, you will be required to pay a £50 deposit (cheque or cash) which will be refunded on attendance.

Would you like to help deliver the Sustainability Challenge 2018 to our 1st year undergraduate students?
We are looking for enthusiastic and approachable members of academic and PSS staff from all parts of the University, including the library and cultural institutions, to help us run the Sustainability Challenge.
The Sustainability Challenge will take place in the morning and afternoon on Tuesday, 18 September, across the Oxford Road campus.
You don’t need any expertise relating to sustainability to volunteer!
There are 2 main roles available:
· Facilitators who will work directly with groups of students taking part in the Challenge
· Event staff who will fulfil a number of different roles to ensure the event runs smoothly
The Challenge takes the form of a 2.5 hour simulation exercise, based on the fictitious University of Millchester’s new Campus East Development. Students will work in interdisciplinary groups to plan the new campus, in the context of changes to climate policy to address extreme weather events around the world.
Volunteers on last year’s Challenge said that they really enjoyed the opportunity to work with colleagues and students from across the University. It's also a great way to develop new skills.
If you’d like to volunteer, please visit our website, where you can find out more about the Challenge, and register your interest:
