Mesh Network Experimentation
Work has started on a mesh application to provide (possible delayed) instant messaging and other non time critical information to mobile and fixed devices using Bluetooth, WiFI and other networking capabilities. The mesh application can be used to collect statistical data about its usage and the devices it encounters provided users give permission for this. There is scope in this domain for PhD projects looking at areas such as:
Social networking: How devices and people interact, frequency and duration of interaction?
Trust and Security: What users are willing to allow their devices to be used for by other people? How traffic is forwarded securely?
Protocols and configuration: Mesh protocols for medium access, routing, security, transport and ideas for novel mesh applications.
Sensors and mesh networks: Using both sensor networks and mobile laptops, PDAs, smart phones for data collection and environmental monitoring.
