Emerging Internet Technologies
In the first two tutorials of semester 2, we want you to investigate a number of topics concerning emerging Internet based technologies. The investigation should cover not just the technological aspects of each topic but also the wider legal, social and ethical implications.
By default, the first of these tutorials will take place in the first week of semester 2, week starting Jan 30th; the second tutorial will be in the second two-week period
Each student is allocated a topic using the A-G codes used in previous tutorials.
For your allocated topic we want to undertake, before the first tutorial, the following tasks:-
- Find out what it is. What does it do and how does it do it?
- Identify at least two examples of the technology and describe what they do and how they work. If possible use them yourself and describe the experience.
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of the technology?
- What are the legal, social and ethical issues raised by use of this technology?
In tutorial 1 of semester 2 we want each of you to give a 10-minute informal presentation on your topic, concentrating on its functionality and technical aspects. Use whatever visual aids or presentation style you feel appropriate in the tutorial.
In tutorial 2 of semester 2 we want you to each give a 5-minute presentation on the legal, social and ethical issues raised by your topic (again use whatever visual aids or presentation style you feel appropriate in the tutorial). This tutorial should conclude with a discussion, amongst the group, of the common themes that have emerged.
