Manchester Hosts High
Profile Security Conference
ISA 2007
Date: September 1st. 2007
This August, the School of Computer Science hosted the Third International Symposium on Information Assurance and Security. The conference, organised by Dr Ning Zhang (Manchester) and Dr Ajith Abraham (Chung-Ang University, Seoul), brought together researchers, practitioners, and policy makers involved in information security and assurance to exchange ideas and to learn about the latest developments in their field.
The conference, technically sponsored by ICST and Create-Net, proved a great success, with delegates from over 25 countries presenting previously unpublished work on a variety of information assurance, security and privacy topics. The conference proceedings have been published by IEEE Computer Society Press.
Highlights included keynote speeches by Dr. Patrick Wang, Professor of Computer and Information Science North-eastern University, Boston, and Paul King, Senior Security Advisor at Cisco systems. Professor Wang spoke on Biometric Technologies; automated methods that enable identification based on acquired physical or behavioural characteristics. Applications include hand and iris scans and the use of thermal imaging for emotion recognition. Professor Wang’s talk provided some fascinating insight into the application of such technologies in the war on terror. In his session, Paul King highlighted how Cisco is addressing the growing number of complex security issues within the organisation, from flash threats to corporate espionage.
