Aqeel Al-Naser Recieves The Sir William Siemens Medal
Date: December 14th. 2007
Congratulations to Aqeel Al-Naser, a recent computer science graduate who has been awarded the Sir Williiam Siemens medal. The medal is awarded to students who demonstrate the passion and skills to build upon the William Siemens legacy of translating latest scientific thought and technology into practical ideas from which everyone can benefit.
The award recognises Aqueel’s achievements as an undergraduate student, most notably his final year project on Web 2.0 accessibility for visually impaired users. Aqeel addressed the problem that most web-sites are not easily accessible by such users, especially where ‘Web2.0’ and dynamic updating facilities are employed via languages such as ‘AJAX’. Aqeel’s project explored the idea of a ‘bridge’ which intercepts traffic between browser and web-server and derives from this a screen of information suitable for visually impaired users who may be using ‘spoken text’ screen readers.
Aqeel was born in Saudi Arabia and came to Manchester University in 2003. Following graduation from the School of Computer Science in 2006, Aqueel has gone on to work for the Saudi Aramco Oil Company.
