Date: April 2nd 2009

Year 10 and 11 students were invited to the School of Computer Science in Manchester for a fascinating and educational insight into NASA’s latest space exploration projects.

Klaus Havelund (senior Research Scientist, Ph.D., NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory), who is responsible for the development of technologies for ensuring correct behaviour of software on board spacecraft and planetary rovers, shared his knowledge of NASA’s space exploration projects and remotely controlled robots.

The talk covered recent developments in space exploration, the progression of the next remotely controlled robot mission planned for 2011 and some of the developments in the Mars Rover project.

The latest findings concerning the detection of planets in other solar systems were also among the topics of the afternoon, followed by a question and answer session. The visiting students raised very valuable and interesting questions which contributed to this exciting lecture.
