Integrated decision support for clinical oncology - a case study on breast cancer

  • Speaker:   Prof  Paulo Lisboa  (Liverpool John Moores University)

Computer-based decision support is increasingly relevant to clinical oncology. This talk introduces a prototype system centered on a non-linear prognostic model using regularised neural network methods, with rule-based explanation facilities automatically generated from data, to advise clinicians on predicted outcome for specific patient groups. This application was developed and evaluated on consecutive cohorts of patients with operable breast cancer data referred to Christie Hospital.

The talk will conclude with two planned extensions of the system. The first is to further refine prognostic and therapeutic advice with additional information from molecular biology. The second is an interface for the patients themselves in the form of a trusted web-portal as the starting point for a personalized patient information system.
