Conjunctive Query Answering in Description Logics

  • Speaker:   Prof  Carsten Lutz  (University of Bremen)
  • Host:   Thomas Schneider
  • 24th February 2010 at 14:15 in Lecture Theatre 1.4, Kilburn Building
Traditionally, description logic (DL) research has concentrated on reasoning about the conceptual modeling of a domain, as provided e.g. by an ontology. This kind of reasoning is not sufficient when DLs are used in applications that emphasize instance data, such as information integration and ontology- mediated data access. In the last couple of years, this shortcoming has stimulated lively research on (instance) query answering in DLs. The talk gives an overview of the area and presents and summarizes recent results for query answering in expressive and lightweight DLs.
