Experience
Jon is originally from Bognor Regis in West Sussex and studied A-levels in Maths, Physics and Computation, before studying for a degree in Computer Engineering at Manchester. He is now a Senior Engineering Manager for the Core OS group at Apple Inc, California.
“After graduating, I took an engineering position for Transitive, the University spin-off company. I worked there for five years on a number of projects and ended by managing a large engineering team to deliver a product and updates to a major Silicon Valley company. My work spanned from low-level assembly programming, through to putting together business contracts and sales meetings with clients. Following my time at Transitive, I moved to California to work for Apple Inc. Over the past four years, I've grown a team of talented engineers responsible for platform bring-up, drivers, kernel and power management for iPhone OS on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.
“My degree at Manchester enabled me to work with engineering teams at all levels. The breadth of the course gave me grounding in hardware, lowlevel software and appreciation of system architecture. The course also gave me the flexibility to choose my area of interest, which includes silicon design, assembly programming and lowlevel operating system fundamentals. Through this I learnt the key concepts that I continue to use, while working with some of the most talented operating system engineers in the industry. “Every American who learns I'm from the School of Computer Science at The University of Manchester is very impressed. The department has a worldrenowned reputation and history. Having this strong backing has been an advantage to my career on many occasions."
