Social responsibility

Social responsibility is one of the three strategic priorities, together with world-class research and outstanding learning and student experience, of The University of Manchester.

Malawian pupils using computers
Staff and students from the Department have helped introduce computing to schools in northern Malawi.

Social responsibility focuses on five priority areas, in which staff and students in the Department of Computer Science are actively involved.

We place, for example, a great emphasis on improving numbers of and access for women in computer science.

Our work also takes us overseas; a team of staff and students recently travelled to northern Malawi, helping to introduce computing to schools in a region where children had little or no experience of using computers and keyboards.

Research with impact

Researchers in the Department engage in a range of activities, including the Human Brain Project, SpiNNaker and accessibility and usability of the web.

Engaging our communities

Our Department is the north west regional centre of Computing at School, an initiative that provides support for computing in all primary and secondary schools in the region.

Environmental sustainability

We also have an active Green Impact Team. Green Impact teams improve their own environmental performance by progressing through a workbook of actions and implementing as many as possible.

Socially responsible graduates

Our students are engaging in a range of activities, from Stellify and Manchester Leadership Awards to numerous volunteering activities, of which our Malawi project is just an example.

Responsible processes

We work hard to maintain the Department as a fair environment for learning, working and research. We promote women in computer science initiatives, have been awarded a second Athena Swan Bronze, and run a Staff Development Committee with the responsibility to review and monitor our processes with regards to fairness and transparency.

We also have a Social Responsibility Committee - chaired by the Social Responsibility Director - that plans and coordinates activities in these areas.
