How to apply

Decided on your chosen degree programme? It’s time to submit your online application to study at The University of Manchester.

All students, whether home or international, apply for undergraduate courses at UK universities through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). Students must apply online through the UCAS website.

If you are unable to access the internet, contact the UCAS Customer Service Unit on 0870 112 2211.

You can apply to UCAS from 1 September for entry the following autumn. The normal closing date for receipt of applications is 15 January, following which you can apply through UCAS Extra (30 June is the deadline for international applications).

Information for international applicants

English language classes

All students are required to be proficient in spoken and written English. In order to be accepted onto an MSc programme in the Department of Computer Science applicants need to provide evidence of having achieved the required level in one of the following English language qualifications:

  • IELTS score of 6.5 minimum with 6 in all sub-categories
  • Internet based TOEFL 100 ibt with no less than 23 in individual components
  • Cambridge Proficiency Grade 'C'
  • Pearson English overall 59 (writing 51)
  • India: Central Board of Secondary Education Senior School Certificate Year VII (GPA >80)
  • West Africa Education Certificate (WAEC) Grade B2
  • Nigerian Education Council Certificate (NECO) Grade B2

The Department is committed to helping each and every student fulfil their potential - therefore, in addition to the core course modules, we offer free in-sessional English language courses for all overseas students.

The University Language Centre also offers a number of excellent pre-sessional English courses designed specifically to help international students meet our requirements prior to the start of their programmes.

English language requirements

Applicants for all degree programmes require an approved English language qualification. For September 2019 entry, approved English language qualifications include:

  • A-Level English Language grade D
  • AS Level English Language or English Language and Literature grade C
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) grade C or 176
  • Cambridge English: Proficient (CPE) grade C or 176
  • GCE O-Level English Language grade C
  • GCSE English Language grade C or grade 4 in the new grading system
  • IGCSE English Language (1st or 2nd Language) grade C or grade 4 in the new grading system, with grade 2 in Oral exam where specified
  • International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) with an overall average of 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 in each component
  • Internet based TOEFL with an overall score of 90 including 22 in each component

There are alternative acceptable English language qualifications. You can find out more about the requirements for individual countries by viewing our country-specific information.

If you cannot find your particular qualification, send an email to the undergraduate admissions office asking whether your qualification fulfils the English language entry requirement.

Foundation programmes

Would you like to study computer science at Manchester but don't have the right entry qualifications? A Foundation Year course could be the solution for you.

The Integrated Foundation Year is 'year zero' of a four or five year course that leads to a degree from one of the schools of science or engineering at The University of Manchester.

Visa requirements

To study at The University of Manchester, international students require a Tier 4 (General) student visa.
