This research project has funding attached. Funding for this project is available to citizens of a number of European countries (including the UK). In most cases this will include all EU nationals. Project description

A PhD studentship is available for new research on human-robot interaction and cognitive robotics issues in robotics for nuclear decommission. The University of Manchester hosts the RAIN hub (Robotics and AI for Nuclear robotics). This aims at the development of robotics solution for long-term autonomy and human-robot interaction solutions (e.g. for teleoperation and joint control) In nuclear decommissioning scenarios, as well as in extreme environments in general.

This PhD project will in particular focus on the development of a cognitive architecture to support human-robot interaction. Potential topics of research, to be defined in collaboration with the student during the first stages of the PhD, will include:
- Trust in human-robot interaction
- Cognitive architecture for variable autonomy
- Language and non-verbal communication
- Visualisation tools for explanatory robotics and AI
- deep learning for human-robot interaction.

This is a collaborative project between the Cognitive Robotics Lab at the School of Computer Science (Cangelosi) and the Nuclear Robotics Group and the at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Barry Lennox).

The PhD studentship is for 3 years and covers the PhD fees and standard UK bursary for UK/EU students.

  • You must have a self-driven interest in uncovering and solving unknown problems and be able to work hard and creatively without constant supervision.

  • You will possess determination (which is often more important than qualifications) although you'll need a good amount of both.
  • You will have good time management.

  • How well does your previous study prepare you for undertaking Postgraduate Research?
  • Comment on your transcript/predicted degree marks, outlining both strong and weak points.
